CAN FD

CAN FD

CAN bus systems have been the dominant buses in the automotive industry for some 20 years. They are used in small cars as well as luxury models and even all kinds of commercial vehicles. In terms of bus systems, a CAN bus provides the framework on which all communication within a vehicle is based. Due to the constant increase in the “electrification” of vehicles, this universally applicable communications bus is starting to reach the limits of its capability. For this reason, it has been necessary to develop the CAN bus further to make it suitable for the technical needs of the present. The result of this work is called CAN FD (flexible data rate) and is already being introduced into production line vehicles by manufacturers.

In order to enable optimum and customer-friendly diagnostics in vehicle repair workshops, it is necessary to understand these innovations, which are most apparent in the signal patterns. A flexible increase in transmission speed (bit rate) and an improvement in the maximum quantity of data which can be exchanged (extended data length) has required introduction of new bits to act as flags. All these features will be shown to you during your work in this UniTrain course in an easily understood way utilising countless experiments. At the same time, you will also learn some efficient diagnostic procedures. Trainees will put their own CAN FD networks into operation and use them to carry out all kinds of measurements and diagnostic work.
