Basics of transmission technology in motor vehicles

Internal combustion engines have a design-related disadvantage: they can only deliver a reasonable torque and power in a narrowly limited speed range. Therefore, in contrast to the electric motor, they require a gearbox so that both the torque and the speed can be adapted to the driving situation. In the case of a manual gearbox, this is done by the driver, who must select and change gears independently.
